Star Alliance welcomes Continental Airlines as newest global airline partner

The Star Alliance global airline partnership originally created by United Airlines and Lufthansa, now has a brand new partner – Continental Airlines.  Beginning last week, flying on Continental Airlines no longer applies to your SkyTeam benefits, but has switched to Star Alliance.

This opens up some new markets for the Star Alliance as they have for some time had a deficit in Latin America.  Continental has strong hubs in Newark, Houston and Cleveland.  Together with United and US Airways, Continental code-sharing offers the greatest number of flight options for frequent flyers.  With the Continental hub in Newark/New York, gay travelers in New York now have a much greater flexibility when flying with the Star Alliance partners.

The Star Alliance now includes Continental, United, US Airways, Lufthansa, Adria, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana, Austrian, Blue1, BMI, Croatia Airlines, Egyptair, LOT Polish Airlines, Scandanavian Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Spanair, Swiss, TAP Portugal, Thai and Turkish Airways.
